Our client is a global leader in the engineering and industrials space and is a FTSE 250 UK listed company. 

Job Role 

Our client takes the role and importance of world-class investor relations very seriously. They see the role of the Head of Investor Relations ('IR') as being critical to the success of the Company in achieving its objective of delivering sustainable long-term value for all stakeholders, and particularly its shareholders. The primary responsibility of the role is to ensure that both existing and prospective investors and sell-side analysts who cover the Company have a clear understanding of the Company’s strategy, actions, performance and prospects. 

The Head of IR reports to Group CFO and will also work closely with the CEO and other senior leaders from within the business, both operationally and at Group centre. 


This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious, strategically minded, and hands-on self-starter who is looking for a varied and senior role within a PLC and to ultimately make a difference to our client’s global IR programme. 

This is a senior IR leadership hire for our client and the role provides a blend of analytical work, communication with key stakeholders (shareholders, potential investors and analysts) and strategic thinking and influence. 

Ultimately, the ideal candidate will have the experience and confidence to be able to lead from the front and have the aptitude and talent to be on top of the strategic messaging. 

Longer term, opportunities for future development exist within the Group and so the role will suit an experienced investor relations practitioner or a sell/buy side analyst, with personal ambition to thrive within an exciting corporate context.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:

The below list of key responsibilities is not exhaustive.

  • Maintain productive, professional relationships with all research analysts covering our client and ensure the key messages of this complex business are well understood and appreciated. Building and nurturing productive two-way dialogue to ensure the analyst community is fully updated and factually accurate in terms of their estimates and assertions on our client.
  • Respond promptly to queries from investors and analysts providing insightful answers that demonstrate a deep understanding of our client and the broader sector. Ensure all investor and analysts communication is consistent, honest, open and appropriate at all times.  Act as an ambassador/conduit between management and this key stakeholder group.
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group meetings with investors on a regular basis, representing the company, presenting its strategy, and demonstrating a deep knowledge and understanding of its operations and financial performance and outlook.
  • Manage the production of all materials for set piece results presentations at half and full year including slides, message development, scripts etc. Ensure, by working closely with CFO and CEO, that all materials accurately convey the Group’s strategy, performance in prospects in a clear, consistent way.
  • Drafting of all investor/market press releases including prelim and interim results, and 4 quarterly updates per year as well as any ad hoc announcements as required. Work closely with Legal and Co Sec teams in terms of both drafting and appropriate/effective release.
  • Our client takes ESG and sustainability seriously and this role will work alongside the Director of Sustainability to co-ordinate and align the IR messaging.
  • Management of ongoing investor engagement programmes including one off meetings, roadshows in the U.K. and overseas. Working with a range of investment bankers and brokers to ensure management roadshow time is as effective as possible and to engage in investor targeting processes. Oversee all logistics, briefings and preparation of materials to ensure all investor engagement runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
  • Working closely with colleagues, particularly in Co Sec and legal to produce the Annual Report, including production of all front-end content, and development of key messaging. 
  • Managing relationship with key advisers such as corporate brokers, financial advisers and financial PR agencies. 
  • Produce regular reports for both Management Board and PLC Board on market/IR update, peer group analysis and news flow, general macroeconomic updates etc. Represent the views of the investor community within the Company in a way which informs and helps develop company strategy and communications approach.
  • Working alongside Co Sec and advisors ensure that the Company complies with reporting and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as the “eyes and ears” in the market for the company. Monitor our client and broader peer group share price performance and, through relationships with brokers and understanding of the market, evaluate underlying drivers of both absolute and relative performance – reporting back to both Management board and PLC board, or senior management, as appropriate.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders across our client’s business including senior business leadership, and key operational leaders and functions.
  • Accompany management on investor meetings and conferences when appropriate.

Ideal Experience

  • Financially literate, potentially as a result of previous time spent in investment banking or accountancy
  • Hands on experience of investor relations best practice within a blue-chip corporate or experience on the sell or buy-side
  • Proven ability to work alongside, manage and coordinate senior level executives
  • Comprehensive understanding of financial models, equity markets, corporate financials, share register analysis and regulatory environment
  • Experience of the structure and functions of listed companies including Board structures and processes, adviser relationships, listed company obligations etc.

  • Ability to combine commercial and strategic perspective with day-to-day effectiveness – must be willing to get hands dirty; 
  • Communication - strong presentation and report-writing skills; a persuasive personality not afraid to challenge, debate and influence key decisions, and to identify and implement improved ways of doing things
  • Ability to operate independently as well as work well with other internal disciplines such as CoSec, Internal Comms and Group Finance
  • Collegiate and happy to work within small agile teams. This is a high energy, performance-oriented organisation. The ideal candidate will have sufficient confidence and gravitas to enjoy taking a seat at the table with senior management and defending their views on key messaging and implementation of the IR strategy.
