Clone of Meet the team: Tara Mitchell
Tell us about your career journey before joining the Society, and what led you to a role focused on professional development?
I started my career as a receptionist within a large insurance company in London. It was here that I developed an interest in desktop publishing. I then joined Williams Lea, where I was placed in Rothschild, working as part of their desktop publishing team.
After two years at Williams Lea, I went backpacking in Australia and ultimately spent 13 years working for a large Australian bank—initially supporting the CFO and later transitioning into the Investor Relations team. This was a significant chapter in my career, giving me extensive experience within the investor relations and the corporate environment.
I returned to the UK in 2015 and initially joined Old Mutual Group before moving into my current role with the Investor Relations Society supporting the professional development programme.
What does a typical working week look like for you at the Society?
In my current role at the Society, I mainly look after the Certificate in Investor Relations qualification. My typical working week is varied and involves speaking with prospective candidates who are considering studying for the qualification, registering candidates, marking exam papers and working with our international partners.
I also co-work on our Deliver programme, which is our senior leadership programme. This gives me the opportunity to work closely with senior professionals and support their development, while also helping to deliver a programme that is an important part of the Society’s offering.
What attracted you to a career in professional development and learning?
I have been very fortunate throughout my career to have had many people support, believe in me and act as mentors. Being able to now give something back and support others in their own careers was a big part of what attracted me to a role in professional development.
Is there a particular course, programme or initiative you've worked on that you're especially proud of?
I’ve been involved in many of the study guide updates over the past eight years, and I’m especially proud of the teamwork behind them - from our Board members to our Committee members - who continually review, refine, and enhance the guide to ensure it remains relevant and valuable for our candidates. Seeing how the guide evolves each time is incredibly rewarding, and I’m proud to have played a part in that journey. Keep an eye out for our updated study guide coming soon!
For someone new to investor relations, what advice would you give them as they start their career?
You’re not alone… we’re here to help. Whether you’re making use of our member resources, attending events to network and connect with others, joining one of our courses or studying for our qualification, there are plenty of opportunities to meet people who are on a similar path in their career.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Outside of work, I’m a member of a local performing arts school, where I take weekly tap, jazz and musical theatre classes - this is my weekly therapy! I’ve also had the opportunity to perform in two local shows, which has been a fantastic experience and something I really enjoy.
