What does the future of Investor Relations look like in an environment shaped by technological change, evolving investor expectations and increasingly competitive capital markets?

In August’s episode of Breakwater Strategy’s Elevating IR podcast, Investor Relations Society CEO Matt Hall joined hosts Mark Hayes and David Grunfeld for a wide-ranging discussion on the changing role of the IRO and the themes emerging across the profession.

Drawing on conversations with Society members from across the professional IR community, Matt highlighted a consistent trend: the IR role is becoming broader, more strategic and increasingly influential within organisations. While technical excellence in reporting, disclosure and financial communication remains fundamental, today's leading IROs are expected to provide insight, judgement and market intelligence that help executive teams and boards make better decisions.

As Matt noted:

“What companies are looking for from their IROs now is insight. They want to understand what investors are thinking, where capital is moving, how their peers are being valued, emerging risks, emerging opportunities, and how their narrative is landing into the market.”

The conversation explores the theme of IR as a Trusted Advisor, reflecting the focus of the Society's recent Annual Conference. Matt discusses the importance of building credibility through deep business and market knowledge, bringing clarity to complex investor feedback, and providing consistent, evidence-based advice to management teams and boards. In previous episodes, and through research and advisory work, Mark and David have examined how capital is becoming more fragmented, investor audiences more diverse, and expectations of corporate access and engagement increasingly sophisticated.

With that in mind, the discussion also highlights the ever growing importance of data, analytics and AI literacy within the profession. As access to information becomes easier than ever, the challenge for IROs is increasingly about interpretation rather than collection: turning data into meaningful insight and translating market signals into actions that support business strategy.

Other topics include the evolution of investor targeting, balancing technology with relationship-building, the strengths of the UK IR market, and the role of continuous professional development in preparing professionals for the future.

Looking ahead, Matt shares his vision for 2030, where Investor Relations is consistently recognised as a strategic function and a source of competitive advantage, with IROs playing a central role in bringing the voice of the market into the boardroom.

Whether you're an established IR leader or earlier in your career, this episode offers valuable insight into the skills, behaviours and capabilities that will shape the profession in the years ahead.
